Tsuru Kame - 鶴亀

Tsuru Kame is the first play in the study of Noh Chanting called Utai. The text is written in Gyosho semi cursive calligraphy, with furigana (syllabic Japanese scripts) only for unusual or rare Kanji (Chinese characters / ideograph). On the right of the vertical text lines is the notation.

Hagoromo is a very famous play that one learns in the middle of the second book.
Usually the teacher Wakebayashi Koichi who is a 'Shite' actor chants the text that students have to repeat 'phrase' by 'phrase' in the beginning of 'Utai' study. As the practice advances the parts will grow longer.

Toboku is as well a very often played Noh and will be practiced in the third book.
After completing the three volumes, thus the first 15 plays, the study can be continued with the many other plays of the Kanze repertoire, each available in a separated booklet.

Some students will practice 'Utai' only, some 'Shimai' the dance performance part of Noh plays.
Professional actors, most members of ancient actor families, will grow up with daily learning of the complete Noh art.
